Productivity @ Work - Not just for working adults ...

As Singapore Government advocates greater productivity @ work, such concept and best practices apparently have become quite contagious. Check this out from the government: http://productivity.enterpriseone.gov.sg

Productivity is not only the buzz word that had caught up with the working adults, it has quite naturally imbued in the hearts of the little ones as well .... especially when the kid understands that "Productivity is achieving MAXIMUM efficiency by DOING LESS".

Here is an example:
Observe how "efficiently" the kid had completed the second column of letter "d"s or rather, a straight line cutting across all the cells in the second column; merely touching the right side of all the "o"s.

Frankly speaking, the kid had done likewise for all the "b"s as well. We as parents had to step in to instruct for "rework" due to "quality" and "behavioural" issues ;-)

This ain't real productivity, it's plain LAZINESS!

What is "Rachel How Many Day"?

My little one was so excited when she got into the car and I asked her why:

Dad: "Little girl, why are you so excited?"

Kid: "Because tomorrow is Rachel How Many Day!"

Dad: "What's Rachel How Many Day? Is Rachel your friend?"

Kid: "Dad! Don't you know that tomorrow is Rachel How Many Day????!!!"

After a deep long thought.... "Light Bulb!" then I realised she was refering to the
Singapore's Racial Harmony Day! (21 July)

"It's GOOD to EMBARRASS you, Dad!"

While there were many people queueing up at the airport's custom checkpoint, a little kid exclaimed an embarrassing remark about her dad's pants. The dad was quite embarrassed and demanded the kid to be silent at once while the rest of the family members giggled or laughed.

Just before bed time on the following night, the dad gathered the kids to pray....

Dad prayed," ... we pray that the kids would not say anything that will embarrass the parents... "

Then the little cheeky kid interrupted,"Hey Dad! It's GOOD to Embarrass you!"

The dumbfounded dad asked,"WHY?"

The little kid answered,"Then everyone can LAUGH and BE HAPPY, right?!"

Then all the kids started laughing and giggling away ....

The dad had never thought of it that way and laughed heartily as well.

I guess joining in the laughter might be a means of defusing certain moments of embarrassment ;D

Ask me in private if you wanna clearer detail of what the little kid did earlier ;-p

Alternative of "I don't like you, and I don't want to be your friend!"

Many a time, we hear toddlers exclaiming the following phrases when they are unhappy with their friends,
"I don't like you, and I don't want to be your friend anymore!"
"I don't like you, and my friends will not to be your friends anymore!"

So, what phrase could the kid probably exclaim when he/she is very unhappy with the parents?

Just got this from the 4 y.o.:

"Daddy, I don't like you, and I will tell Grandpa & Granny NOT to be your PARENTS anymore!"

Gzzzz .... I wonder what would be next?

How do you know that the kid is bored during a wedding meal?

Majority of the guests invited for a typical wedding dinner will be adults, and kids who tagged along with their parents for such dinners would likely be bored and tend to create something out of the blue to relieve themselves from the boredom. Some would roam or roll around on the carpeted floor (without their shoes), some would play hide-and-seek, and so on.

And I managed to capture this little girl performing this "creative art" piece on the dining table:

Take a close peek below, and I believe you might have just guessed it right!

An Art piece evolved from Boredome ;D

It was a Flower with petals from the crispy prawn tempuras!

So, you can now count the number of the prawns eaten by the little kid.

BTW, this did not happen during Shawn and Eva's wedding ;D

Effective Reminders@WC - Series 1

I had been going in and out of AH recently to visit my dad and I personally found these toilet reminders quite easy to comprehend and put them into practice.

We could probably share these with our kids, make it fun for them to learn and adopt hygienic practices at home or in the public toilets.... but you may have to be careful with the last reminder ;-)

Yah! I know X'mas is over, and it's the 14th day from 25 Dec 2009!
Perhaps, you may like to know these fun facts and share these with your kids in the coming X'mas which is just 11 months down the road (time flies ....). If you can't remember them, then please bookmark this blog ;D

Well, guess what answers you might get when you ask kids about Santa Claus? For example,
Why does Santa Claus wear RED?

Some kids' answers:

Because he is a very HAPPY old man and his whole body turns RED

Riding in the sky could be quite dangerous, so he need to wear RED for the airplane pilots to spot him easily and give way to his sleigh, then he will always deliver my presents on X'mas!

Counting down and Welcoming the New Year 2010!

This was my first time to take a peek at the community countdown to New Year party.

I took a walk with my two kids & Belle to the event, and we arrived in the nick of time for the Countdown!And here are some of the clips:

The event was held in the large open-air courtyard beside Hong Kah Community Club

This clip will show you the countdown over at Hong Kah North celebrations and if you fast forward to the last 10 seconds, you should be able to see me popping a bottle of sparkling fruit juice; it actually popped by itself without me touching the cork at all .... geeeezzzzz ....

Who's the most beautiful teacher?

Out of curiosity, the dad asked the kids whose the most beautiful teacher in their childcare centre:

4 y.o. :"Miss R.... ! "

Dad :"Why? "

4 y.o. :"Because she loves us and I like her the most!"

Then Dad asked the older kid who is now the alumnus to the childcare centre:

9 y.o. :"Miss A.....! "

Dad :"Why? "

9 y.o. :"Because I like her, that's why! "

It is interesting to observe how kids look at Beauty.
Apparently, Beauty to these kids is not based on physical appearance alone.
It is the Relationship that the educators have built with the kids that made them the most beautiful, not just in the kids' eyes, but in their hearts as well.
I salute to these Beautiful Teachers, Well done!

p.s., it might be more appropriate to publish this post in 2010's Teachers' days, but why should I hold back to praise these excellent educators ;D

We were travelling back home in th car in the late night, and my wife was so tired after the shopping.

Then she talked to the kids and it went on like this:

Mummy: "It's already past my bedtime and I really need your help to pack your bags so that I could sleep as soon as possible. Otherwise, I will not be able to PERFORM well in my work tomorrow."

Kid: "Mummy, I thought you work as an accountant, so why do you need to DANCE well in your work tomorrow?"

The "LIVE EXPERIENCE" in Hollywood Dinos (Jurong Bird Park)

We bought some tickets from the promoters for the Hollywood Dinos and we took the opportunity to visit the attraction on their first day, 12 Dec 2009.

How to get there (click here to find out)?
Well, the entrance for this attraction is just beside the entrance of Jurong Bird Park. So, if you know how to get to the bird park, I believe you can find Hollywood Dinos (click here for more information).

Some pointers:

There is no toilet within the attraction, so either you clear your (especially kids) bowel/bladder before you enter or you may need to endure during your adventure for the next 45 to 60 min.
Don't expect this to be as exciting or the same as those in Disney World or Universal Studios. What do you expect from a "lowly" priced attraction like this as compared to the theme parks?
You should not stay put too long in any point of the "adventure" as there are groups coming in after you, so please be ambulatory and make way for subsequent groups of tourists.
Prepare extra money in case you wish to buy some dino-related merchandise after the tour to encourage your kids for doing well in their exams.

Well, I have heard of the adults/teens going for the wild foam parties at the beach .... but this is my first time witnessing The Kids' Bubble & Foam Party!!

There's a stage for games and performaces.

The kids could literally swim within the foam!

Dad: "This soup is yummy! How about you have a go on this CHICKEN FEET?"

Dad: "Why not, it's like jelly, you will like it."

4 y.o. Kid: "I'm NOT eating the CHICKEN FEET, because I DON'T WANT to GROW another LEG!"

Kid: "Dad, what do you call these yellow and black stripes on the road?"

Dad: "Wow! Good question there, I know that they are meant to warn drivers of the hump/hazard but never thought of its name. So, what do you think it's called?"

Kid: "Hmmmm ....The black and white striped path is known as the Zebra crossing, so the yellow and black striped path is known as the grrrrrraaaaooooo .... TIGER Crossing!"

Well, is it really called the Tiger Crossing?

The waitress was about to refill the "Sprite" (soft drink) for the table when she discovered something amissed........

Waitress: "Excuse me, I realised that one glass is missing from the table .... "

When everyone was trying to find the cause of the lost glass, then one of the kids slowly brought up the glass to the table.

Kid: "I was just trying to try my luck to see if I could get the F&N Orange if this Sprite is gone."

Waitress: "You could simply request for another glass and I will be glad to serve you."

Lesson learnt: Ask and you'll be given ;D

The dad was ushering the kids to the swimming pool and while he was opening the glass door for his youngest daughter, she pushed her way through very quickly with her lengthy toy "water cannon".

The next thing they saw was the toy "water cannon" broke into two. Then ....

4 y.o. gal: "Dad! It is all your fault!"

Dad: "Why? Aren't you the one who broke it?"

4 y.o. gal: "Dad! It is your fault because you never open the glass door wide enough for me to go through!"

Well, this showed me that kids at such a young age could already figure out "some reasons" to blame on others to get away with their own fault. Thus, being a parent myself has to be aware of such development in kid's attitude and help them to learn to be responsible for their own act in the early years .... Otherwise .... good luck to those around her when she's in trouble in the future.

I gave some hints to the kids by telling them to think of something that is the opposite of HUGE and SCARY ...

9 y.o. kid: "The opposite of HUGE & SCARY would be something mini & nice ...."

7 y.o. kid: "I KNOW I KNOW .... the opposite of MONSTER is MINI-STER! "

QQ Rice - Anyone tasted or interested?

Anyone of you out there tasted this QQ Rice (传香饭糰) before?
We had this fellow here:

To me, it tasted quite fine and it did not cause any flatulence.
My kids liked it too.
I ate it around 5:30pm and I could still eat my dinner quite well.

It was during dinner time when the dad was shouting at his wife because of an unpleasant remark made by her. Then, the mummy retaliated with a barrage of sharp criticism on the dad. The "Battle between the Sexes" went on for a few more minutes AND the young children were listening.

When there was a brief moment of silence, the kids blurted ....

9 y.o. daughter: "Dad, you should stop complaining further. Do you remember teaching me not to talk back during an argument as it may make matter worse?"

7 y.o. son: "Dad, we will learn from you to argue and do the same to you when we grow up."

4 y.o. daughter: "Yah! Daddy! ... if you are angry, you will grow Fat, Fat, Fat and become a Fatty Daddy ..."

Could the daddy carry on with his tongue lashing after hearing all the above from his kids?

The dad finally apologised and admitted that the kids were right and there was peace once more at the dining table ....

So, what do you think was the lesson learnt from the above event?

A Kid's reason for serving her

The dad had prepared a cup of milk for the kid and requested her to come over to the kitchen to help herself.

4 y.o. kid: "Daddy! Can you feed me, pleasssssssse?"

Dad: "Look little girl, you are no longer a baby and you are able to hold the cup and drink the milk on your own."

4 y.o. kid: "Daddy! I am blind now, I cannot see the cup .... help me, pleassssssssse!!!!!"
Then she raised her arms as if she was trying to reach out to everything around her with her eyes CLOSED!

Well, the dad was persistent enough and managed to train the kid to be self-reliant at the end ....

My son was quite sick due to the hazzzzzzeeeee .... and had a bad cough and runny nose, so we bought a box of kid's face mask for him.

When I "requested" him to wear the face mask, he was reluctant to do so initially as he felt he might be the odd one out in the public or in his class.

Nevertheless, with a bit of reminder of the education on H1N1, he wore it (whenever he started coughing a lot).

Well, he has his way to encourage himself to wear it as well:

7 y.o. son: "Dad! Look at me! I'm Optimus Prime, reporting for duty, Sir!!"

Kid's way to cool an angry parent

The dad was so angry with the kids as they were not obeying and causing hell lot of noise in the car. Then ....

Dad: "QUIET! Why aren't you guys following my instruction to put on your safety belt and keep slient for a minute! ......."

....then the scolding continued ..... then there was silence ..... until .....

4 y.o. gal: "Daddy, people will not be beautiful when they are angry. Same for you daddy, when you are angry, you will not be handsome anymore ...."

After the listening to his daughter's witty remark, his anger sort of dissipated ....

No WuShu (Chinese Martial Art) Class

Some kids had received a notification slip during their WuShu class, requesting them to inform their parents to register for the subsequent sessions. Some of the parents had already registered and paid the fees. However, one of the kids returned home and .....

Kid: "Dad, there is NO WuShu Class next week."

Dad: "I have already paid for the new sessions which should start from next week onwards. So, what do you mean there is no class next week?"

Kid: "It's true as I have received the paper from my WuShu coach. Here it is..."

The kid showed dad the notification slip ....

Dad: "Geeezzzzz ..... "

Persuading kids to go to playground

When the kids were asked to go to the playground ....

"We don't like to go to the playground ..." Some of the little girls whimpered.

"Why?" The teacher asked.

The girls explained,"Because there are many mosquitoes there!"

One 4 y.o. girl who loves playing at the playground then exclaimed,
"Don't worry, let's go to the playground, the mosquitoes will LOVE you ....."

Well, that's true! The mosquitoes really love the kids, for survival sake ....

When the dad went to the child .... and saw a few ants crawling on the floor ...

4 y.o.: "Daddy! You see lah! .... Because you DID NOT GET RID of the ant, it INVITES other ants to come to our house ...."

Dad :"Nope, But you can walk back to rest in your bedroom."

The kid got out from the car reluctantly and while walking back home with his dad,

7 y.o. :"Dad, I am tired, but you wake me up, so, can I play computer games?"
Dad :"Not until you complete your homework."

7 y.o. :"Dad, I can only play computer games now..."
Dad :"WHY?!"

7 y.o. :"Because I will need more energy to hold the pencil and write when I do my homework ..."

7 y.o. :"... But I only need one finger (press the keyboard) to play the computer games."

7 y.o.:"... I won't play games that need the mouse."

I was trying to teach my 4y.o. kid about Zebra Crossing, so as I stopped my car before the Zebra crossing and I had a brief Q & A with my kid:

Dad:"What is in front of us?"

4y.o.:"I duno ..."

Dad:"It is a Zebra Crossing."

4y.o.:"Daddy, you are very funny ... there is no Zebra Crossing ... there are many PEOPLE crossing."

Yes! The kid was right, there were indeed many people crossing the road (using the Zebra crossing).

There was this moment when our Chihuahua, Belle, defecated on several spots within her cafe, as we had given her too much good food (Divine Pet food).

Before I could clear one of the piles of waste, she literally gobbled up and left no trace of it .... eeeeewwwww!! That was digusting!

I told my wife who then scolded the pet,
"Belle! Do you think you are a PLANT that feeds on SHIT??!!"

And my 4 y.o. added,
"Belle, you want to be a FLOWER, I put SOIL on you, OK?"

Water Cushion for kids with high fever

Over the past weekend, I had a hell of my time caring for my two kids who had high fever. It was a roller coaster ride, down and up to 39.8 degC.

One of the recommendation from the GP was to acquire water cushions, place them in the fridge to cool them, then place them under the bed sheet or within the pillow case and get the kids to lie on them. This will help to dissipate the body heat and lower the body temperature. The water cushion might be kept cool if it is used in an air-conditioned room. Wrap the cold Water Cushion with a towel if necessary as condensation would occur around the Water cushion; you would not want the patient to be drenched, would you?

So, how much did the Water Cusion cost me?

If you go to the BIG stores in the shopping malls, it may cost you from around S$8 to S$15.
But you could also get it at around S$2 in value shops, such as the Value$. And I bought two of them, so I could interchange them when one of them becomes warm.

What's the length & width? It's about 45cm x 30cm, big enough to cover the upper body of a 7 y.o. kid.

So, what do I do with them when my kids recover?

Place it under my butt .... shooooik sia!!

Wow! I didn't know that the kids are taught to make Dreamcatchers in their primary school.

Dreamcatchers were originally made by the Red indians in North America for their kids to catch & purge bad dreams while letting the good ones through to the kids.

Just brought our pup for her third vaccination (end June'09) and guess what, we've got a name card from the Vet with the pup's picture on it plus her name with my surname => Belle LEE

We were wondering where we could go out for some family fun time during the June school holidays without worrying about the H1N1 pandemic in Singapore ... all the enclosed areas were definitely out of the list. Well, Botanic Gardens would be a good choice.

Simply find a nice cool spot under the tree (on a week day's morning), climbing trees, playing Frisbie, ball passing, taking memorable pictures and picnicking.

Well, the schools and childcare centres had certainly done a great job to get our kids' temperature checked on a daily-basis, and even my 4 y.o. had learnt to do so.

But it had sort of got "Out-of-HAND"; caught her red-handed when she woke me from my afternoon nap as she was beeping away with the Braun thermometer!

Celebrated our wedding anniversary along Lorong Kilat (some where off Jalan Jurong Kechil in Bukit Timah). We (+ 3 kids) went to one of the Korean restaurants, Woori Nara (there was a Chicken symbol at her glass door). Lots of chicken stuff, but it wasn't as palatable as I thought it would be (sorry, I am not a gourmet, just didn't suit my family's taste).

Well, the kids didn't really eat much for dinner because they were dying to enter UDDERS (just a few shops away from Woori Nara).

In this Udders, you will get the opportunity to express your drawing and writing talents on their glass walls, but they were cleaning them up when we were there, so we just focused on the ICE CREAMS.

Customers will have a taste of the ice cream before you order it; ain't that great!
We tried the ChocMarsh, Hazel Nut Chocolate, Strawberry Fields ....

The Hazel Nut Chocolate is the BEST!!! As it has chunks of chocolate coated hazelnut paste waffles inside, which was really unique and it tasted GREAT!!! My kids loved the ChocMarsh. The freshness of the strawberry within the Strawberry Fields was amazing too (can't really described with words, you have to taste it for yourselves)!

Besides the ice-cream, we saw some interesting cartoons in the inner room. The wall had cartoon pictures of the cows poking fun on the "mammary glands". They were really funny but sort of "suggestive" .... the cow had really gone to gym to attain its six packs!

Just let me tell you how much my kid loved your ice-cream:

Rabbits vs Monkeys

This is not another race between the Rabbit, Monkey or any Turtle.

My parents' maid brought in a pet rabbit from the neighbour's house and showed it to my kids; they were absolutely excited to play with it. While we were getting into the car:
My 8 y.o.: "Dad! Can you please buy rabbits for all of us?"
Dad: "I already have 'THREE MONKEYS' and I could not afford to take care of three more rabbits!"
My 3 y.o.: "MONKEYS! Where are they, I want to see and play with them!" (she was so curious and jumped down from the car)
Dad: "Oh, please get back into the car! You don't have to see them, as you are one of them lah!"

I was actually refering to my three adorable and mischievious "Monkeys" who are more worthy than those pesky wabbits ;-)

Mummy: "You'd better straighten the chair, or else you might become a PANCAKE when the chairs sandwiched you in an accident!"

3 y.o.: "You don't want PANCAKE, then you don't eat PANCAKE loh!"

Diaper Routine

My little One wet the bed two nights ago when we forgot to put on the diaper for her. So, I made sure that she would wear her diaper last night:

Dad: "LET ME PUT ON THE DIAPER FOR YOU!"
Little One: "DON'T WANT, I don't want you!"

My wife was already asleep and I did not wish to interrupt her sleep, so I tried to be soft on the Little One.

Dad: "If you don't wear it, you will wet the bed again! This is the last bed I have for you!"
Little One: "I will not 'wee' on the bed!"
Dad: "If you don't want to wear your diaper, then you must go to the toilet now to pass urine!"
Little One: "You go far far away then I go"
Dad: (sigh ...) "OK Ok (then I move to the door)"
Little One: "NO! You go far far away, I don't want to see you!"

So, I move away from the door and out of her sight, but peek through the door momentarily. I was glad that she picked herself up and went over to the washroom, did her business, clean up on her own and went back to bed.

I didn't wana create further nuisance with the little one and took the risk without the diaper for that night... And I was glad that she did not wet the bed.

p.s. Despite such "encouraging" experience, I will still conitnue with the diaper routine till we are very such that she would stop urinating in her sleep, I really do not wish to waste any more $$$ on beddings.

This was one of the happy moments for being a father, though I tend to consider Father's Day as another day to boost sales on man's wear/ware/delicacies.

Anyway, I was presented with this enormous breakfast:

My eldest kid literally made 20+ waffles, emptied a whole tub of yogurt, a bunch of bananas and a cup of coffee! (with my wife's help). I could hardly eat my lunch after such a hearty morning meal!

One thing for sure: It was an unforgettable Father's Day!! Thank you!!

I was getting the little one who just turned 3yrs+3 wks to wean her from using her milk bottle:

Dad: "OK little girl, you will be drinking your milk from a cup."

Little one: "I am still a baby ..." (Ha! Her old tricks again.)

Dad: "No ... you are a big girl already! So you should use a cup and stop using milk bottle!

Little one: "... you give me a cup, I will spill my milk leh ... " (that spilling accident happened a couple of days back, and she had quite a bit of discipline)

Dad: "Hmmm . . . . that's true. Alright! This will be the last time you drink from the milk bottle!"

Dad: "Now go and get your cushion!" (she always had her huggable stuff when she drinks from the bottle)

Little one: "I cannot see the cushion, can you get for me?" (Wow! Another old trick of hers)

I kept real quiet for a moment. When she saw me glaring at her, she went off to get her cushion and returned.

Dad: "You said you cannot see the cushion, so what are you holding now?"

Little one tried to ignore me, then placed her cushion on the floor to wait for me to serve her the milk bottle! Gosh!

Giving the Glare to "innocent" kids

There were times when parents just would not wish to raise their voices or rods at their kids, especially in public places, so they would likely use the "FORCE of the GLARE" with their eyes .... like this:

And this was the response from a 3 y.o. kid when her daddy glared at her for misbehaving at the food court:

As there were silence at the dining table, the little one started to look back at her dad's glaring eyes for a few more seconds, then she said:

"Dad! What happened to your eyes"

The dad looked surprised with the little one's "innocent" response:

Then the little girl had a good giggle over the change of her daddy's expression.

Well, that really helped to dissipate the fumes from the dad ;-)

Boslters Snatching & Pushing on Father's Day's Eve 2008

The little one was making a fuss as she wanted to snatch her elder sister's bolster for the night.

Little one: "IT'S MINE!!!"
Elder sis: "Alright, you can have it ....."
Dad: "Little one, you should thank your sister!"
Little one: "Don't want!" (then she sped off with her loot)

I was upset with the little one's behaviour, but I waste no time to praise my eldest one; the eldest lot of siblings tends to sacrifise a lot more than the younger ones, so it would be proper to give due respect and encouragement for their care and concern for others.

Dad: "I am glad that you are very giving to your little sister, so I will let you have my bolster for the night."
Elder sis: "But you will not have your bolster to sleep later."
Dad: "It's alright."

The elder sis and I were "too giving", so we started a tussle of pushing my bolster to one another; by the way, my bolster ain't smelly or yucky-looking.

Elder sis: "Dad, I really want you to have it."
Dad: "Why?"
Elder sis: "Because it is going to be Father's Day, right?"

At that moment, I was both dumbfounded and touched by her thoughtfulness.

Dad: "It's alright. When you are asleep, I will get my bolster back from you."

I usually felt that Father's Day is more of a commercial gimmick than anything else, but for this time round, I was glad that my kid made this Father's Day's Eve a special one with her simple but heart-warming "gift". Thank you, my Eldest one!

Broccoli is NOT my FRIEND!!

A mum was trying to get his 6 y.o. son to eat his Broccoli and the boy was disgusted, and here went the chat:

Boy: "I hate Broccoli!"

Mum: "Broccoli is good for you; it will make you Strong and Healthy! Broccoli is your FRIEND!"

Boy: "Broccoli is NOT my FRIEND! Broccoli does not have hands and legs, how can it be my FRIEND!"

Well, parents just need to choose the right words for such "intelligent" kids.

长江七号。。。怎么变成。。。

My kid was really attracted to this little character from Stephen Chow's movie "长江七号". So my wife got this little one for him, and he was overjoyed.
Cute right?

Then he went around to tell others that he has this "长焦鸡号" ... oops ... wrong pronunciation.

My kid's comment on Parental discipline

I was putting the kids to bed and chat with them how they feel about discipline from daddy and mummy, like spanking, no TV and other forms of restrain from gratification, and I took the time to explain why we were disciplining them for their good.

The kids obviously did not like the taste of discipline as it was pretty painful when they were terribly naughty.

Nevertheless, I was surprised by my eldest one who concluded her thoughts with this comment: "Dad, please do not stop disciplining us".

I believe all loving parents would want to discipline their kids for their own good, and I believe some how the kids would understand the goodness from discipline as they progress in life.
